The responses I got when I started in IT ranged from hilarious escape plans ("run," "become a plumber," and the classic "just don't") to some genuinely solid advice. Here’s the distilled version, sprinkled with a bit of humor to keep things light.

📘 Keep Learning

The tech world never sleeps, and neither should you. Keep picking up new languages, frameworks, and ways to fix those annoying bugs. The moment you think you know everything, the universe will humble you with a mysterious error message that might as well say, "Nice try, buddy."

🤝 Stay Cool and Humble

IT can be full of big egos. Stay chill, take your time, and remember, every expert was once a newbie. And if you ever feel too big for your boots, just remember that even the most seasoned pros still get stumped by the office printer.

🤔 Ask Questions

Don’t pretend you get it when you don’t. Asking questions is the fastest way to actually understand stuff and gain knowledge. Seriously, there's no shame in asking why your code isn't working – we all know the real answer is always "because computers are out to get us."

🎓 Get Certified

Those certificates matter. They help you get noticed and can boost your resume. Plus, they make great wall art for your home office – nothing says "I'm a professional" like a piece of paper that cost you thousands of pounds, immense headaches and countless hours of your life.

💻 Love the Code

Embrace coding. It's the core of everything you'll do. Code is like a relationship – sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but you keep trying because you believe in it. And when it finally runs without errors, it’s pure magic.

😅 Get Used to IT Jokes

You'll hear the same jokes over and over. Eventually, you'll laugh before they even finish or say them yourself. "Have you tried turning it off and on again?" will be etched into your brain forever. Just smile and nod.

🛑 Set Boundaries

People will try to get free tech help especially family. Learn to say "no." Or, if you’re feeling cheeky, start charging them in cookies. You’ll be amazed how quickly they learn to Google their own problems.

🙃 Master People Skills

You'll deal with all kinds of frustrated folks. Stay calm and keep smiling. When someone says, "My internet is broken," they really mean "I forgot my Wi-Fi password again." Patience is key.

🔄 Embrace Change

Just when you think you've got it, everything updates. Be flexible and ready to learn. It’s like the universe is playing a prank on you – just when you’ve mastered something, here’s a new version to keep you on your toes.

🎯 Pick Your Specialties

Specialize in something you love. Being a jack-of-all-trades can sometimes mean you're a master of none. Find your niche, whether it's security, networks, or knowing all the shortcuts in Excel. Be the go-to guru in your favorite area.

🧗 Start at the Bottom

Most IT careers begin at the help desk. Embrace it as a learning experience. And yes, you'll be explaining how to reset passwords more times than you can count. Just think of it as character building.

🕵️ Beat Imposter Syndrome

Everyone feels like a fraud sometimes. Acknowledge it, challenge it, and move on. Remember, even the best in the field started out wondering if they were good enough. Spoiler: they were, and so are you.

🚀 Learn from Mistakes

Messing up means you’re learning. Just don’t make the same mistake twice. Or if you do, at least make it a funny story to tell your colleagues at lunch. Mistakes are proof you're trying!

🌱 Get Real-World Experience

Work on real problems before diving into too many certifications. Nothing beats the real deal experiment with labs at home – think of it as the difference between reading about swimming and jumping into the deep end.

🔝 Always Aim Higher

Don’t get too comfy. Always look for the next challenge, role, or project. Comfort zones are nice, but nothing grows there. Except maybe your collection of tech conference lanyards.

🔍 Find Your Niche

Whether it’s security, networks, or support, dig deep. Being the go-to person makes you indispensable. And hey, being the office hero who fixes things no one else can is pretty cool too.

🔄 Stay Updated

Tech evolves fast. If you're not keeping up, you're falling behind. Think of it as trying to keep up with the latest memes – if you’re not on top of it, you’re out of the loop.

😂 Enjoy the Humor

Sometimes the best advice comes with a joke. And sometimes the joke is to consider becoming a plumber. Hey, at least they get to fix leaks without worrying about data breaches.

🌐 Help Others

The more you help, the more you learn. It’s a great way to get better. Plus, you’ll be the office favourite – who doesn’t love the person who can solve their tech woes?

📝 Document Everything

Good documentation can save your bacon. It makes you a hero when things go wrong and if you forget how you did it in case it happens again. Think of it as leaving a breadcrumb trail – future you will thank past you for being so thoughtful.

🛌 Take Care of Yourself

Burnout is real. Take breaks, have a life outside of work, and unplug. Even superheroes need downtime – and trust me, you don’t want to be the IT person who forgot what fresh air feels like. Don't just breathe IT.

🎢 Enjoy the Ride

IT has ups and downs. Learn to enjoy the ride and don’t sweat the small stuff. It’s all part of the adventure – and who doesn’t love a good rollercoaster?

🤓 Keep Upgrading

Always keep your skills sharp and your knowledge up-to-date. Never stop learning. The day you stop learning is the day you start falling behind – plus, new tech toys are always fun to play with. So there you have it – a blend of wisdom and laughs to help you navigate the wild world of IT. Remember, no matter how tough it gets, there’s always something new to learn and a fresh joke to laugh at. And if all else fails, you can always "turn it off and on again."
