Surface Pro Microphone Not Working in Teams or Windows? Fix It by Removing the Realtek Audio Effects Component
One of the more unusual issues I've recently encountered involved Microsoft Surface Pro devices where the built-in microphone suddenly stopped working.
At first glance, it appeared to be a Microsoft Teams problem. However, after further investigation, it became clear that the microphone wasn't being detected by any application not Teams, Voice Recorder, Zoom, or even Windows Sound settings. This indicated the problem was occurring at the Windows audio driver level rather than within a specific application.
Symptoms
Users may report one or more of the following:
Microphone not detected in Microsoft Teams.
No input device available in Voice Recorder.
Other communication apps such as Zoom or Discord also fail to recognise the microphone.
Windows Sound settings show no working microphone input.
If the microphone isn't working anywhere, there's little point troubleshooting Teams until the underlying Windows issue has been resolved.
The Fix
The resolution was surprisingly straightforward.
Step 1 – Open Device Manager
Launch Device Manager with administrative privileges.
Step 2 – Navigate to Audio Processing Objects (APOs)
Locate and expand:
Audio Processing Objects (APOs)
Step 3 – Uninstall the Realtek Audio Effects Component
Right-click:
Realtek Audio Effects Component
Select Uninstall device.
Once complete, restart the Surface Pro and test the microphone.
In the cases I've encountered, this restored microphone functionality immediately.

If the Issue Persists
If the microphone is still unavailable after removing the Realtek Audio Effects Component:
Return to Device Manager.
Expand Audio Processing Objects (APOs).
Uninstall Voice Clarity.
Restart the device.
Test the microphone again.
Why This Works
Audio Processing Objects (APOs) provide additional software processing for Windows audio devices, such as noise suppression, echo cancellation, and audio enhancements.
Occasionally, these processing components can become corrupted or fail to initialise correctly, preventing Windows from exposing the microphone to applications. Removing the affected APO allows Windows to rebuild the audio processing stack, restoring normal microphone detection.
Devices Affected
So far, I've only observed this issue on Microsoft Surface Pro devices. I haven't yet seen it occur on other Windows laptops or desktops, although the same troubleshooting steps may be worth trying if similar symptoms appear.
Final Thoughts
When troubleshooting microphone issues, it's easy to assume Microsoft Teams is at fault. In this case, Teams was simply reporting a problem caused by the Windows audio subsystem.
If the microphone isn't recognised by any application, checking the Audio Processing Objects (APOs) in Device Manager could save a significant amount of troubleshooting time.
